Cape Coral in Florida is well known as a place to see and photograph burrowing owls. Last year's trip to Marco Island introduced me to this fascinating species. They nest in southwest Florida every spring. Finding nests nearby in Marco Island provided many chances for taking great photos. The weather didn't cooperate this year, but that didn't keep me trying to get those great shots.
Burrowing Owl carrying Lizard
It was my last day of vacation before we headed home and I went to my favorite nesting site. The day before I had captured an image of an owl with a bird carcass. I waited for the owls to come out for what seemed to an eternity. Finally one emerged. I waited to see if its partner would show, when I was shocked to see the second owl with a lizard emerge from the nest.
After swinging the lizard around, the owl grabbed the lizard with its talon.
The owl now had the lizard in its talon. The second owl was clearly paying attention.
As the owl stood holding the lizard, the second one seized the opportunity to steal the tasty snack.
Burrowing Owl Thief
It was no surprise that this resulted in a confrontation. It was short lived as the lizard was reclaimed.
